The service of third-year college seminarians focuses on the poor. Lectures, practicum, journal keeping, and reflection meetings help to achieve the goals of the program. Working as a volunteer at local soup kitchen helps the seminarian to come to an understanding of the root causes of poverty, powerlessness, and the need for systemic change.
The following behavioral objectives are suggested means of achieving the goal of the junior program:
- To acquire a comfortable and receptive presence with the poor
- To become more aware of and sensitive to the problems of the poor and their root causes
- To reflect prayerfully on the experience of serving the poor
- To share experiences and insights with other seminarians in reflection meetings
- To integrate the experience in a way which will be reflected in his personal growth
