Summative Evaluations
Seminarians at Kenrick-Glennon Seminary can earn three degrees: the M.Div., the M.A. and, through the Gregorian University, the S.T.B. Some seminarians will graduate with only an M.Div., some will have an M.Div. and an S.T.B., and some will graduate with all three degrees. To streamline the summative evaluation process each student will have only one summative evaluation exercise.
Seminarians pursuing only the Master of Divinity Degree
Seminarians who are pursuing the Master of Divinity Degree only must take a comprehensive examination. This exam is synthetic in nature. It involves randomly choosing three topics out of the fifteen approved topic areas. The seminarian chooses one topic to write on. This is followed by an oral defense on that question, as well as the two other questions, from the two professors who make up the examination board.
Seminarians pursuing the Master of Divinity Degree and the Bachelor in Sacred Theology (S.T.B.)
Seminarians pursuing the Bachelor in Sacred Theology (S.T.B.) must write a twenty-five-page paper that is synthetic in nature. (This paper could consist in the student developing any one of the fifteen Comprehensive Exam questions in a synthetic way. Other synthetic topics are also possible.) Students will work with an advisor and a second reader. The project is completed with an oral defense.
The STB requirements take the place of and fulfill the requirements for the M.Div. degree.
Seminarians pursuing the Master of Divinity, the S.T.B., and the M.A. Degrees
Seminarians pursuing the Master of Arts Degree must complete a written thesis comprised of 50-80 pages. The thesis is focused on in-depth study of a specific theological topic. Students will work with an advisor and a second reader. The project is completed with an oral defense.
The MA requirements take the place of and fulfill the STB and M.Div. requirements.
